Common questions

Questions Canadian founders ask

What is SR&ED and who can claim it?

SR&ED (Scientific Research and Experimental Development) is a federal tax incentive program that gives Canadian companies tax credits for eligible research and development work. Many technology startups qualify, and the credits are claimed through the corporate tax return. Our Canadian Funding Directory is a starting map.

What is IRAP?

IRAP is the National Research Council's Industrial Research Assistance Program. It provides advice and, for eligible small and medium-sized businesses, funding to support technology innovation.

How much dilution is normal in a funding round?

Founders commonly give up roughly 10 to 25 percent of the company in an early round, though it varies with valuation, raise size and option pool. Use the Dilution & Valuation Calculator to model your own numbers.

How do I know if my startup is ready to raise?

Review your team, traction, financials, legal basics and data room. The Fundraising Readiness Checklist scores your startup across these areas before you pitch investors.
