Choosing an investor

What to look for in a Toronto venture capital firm

Toronto has many venture capital firms, and they are not interchangeable. These questions help you shortlist the right ones before you pitch.

Do they invest at your stage?

Some firms only invest in Series A and later. Others write the first cheque. Check where the firm actually invests before you spend time pitching.

Do they know your sector?

A firm that has built companies like yours can help with customers, hiring and the next round, not only capital.

Have they operated a business?

Investors who have built and sold companies understand the pressure of scaling and can advise from experience.

How fast do they respond?

A clear yes or no saves months. We reply to every pitch within five business days, with a reason if it is a no.

What else do they offer?

Advisory support, introductions and capitalization planning matter as much as the cheque at an early stage.

Is the fit mutual?

Pick investors you would want to work with for years. The relationship outlasts the term sheet.
